Southern Caribbean – ABC islands…
…are Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. These three islands are north of Venezuela and are in the Lesser Antilles. Aruba is a flat island. It is not as lushly tropical as other Caribbean islands. It is quite dry with desert-like vegetation including cacti. Bonaire and Curaçao are surrounded by reefs, and are much more sheltered from the weather. Both Bonaire and Curaçao’s reefs are popular tourist destinations. Bonaire. especially, is known as a diving paradise and all the islands have a multitude of wildlife including flamingos and sea turtles.
Aruba offers plenty of opportunities for great shore excursions. If you’re the adventurous type, there are ATV and jeep safari-like tours where you can either be a passenger or drive yourself. There are photography tours, dinner and pub crawls, charter fishing boats, sailboating, windsurfing, horseback riding, kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving tours. There are many architectural tours available also and there is an open-air market for those who want to experience the local culture. In Aruba there is something for everyone. A couple of the more interesting shore excursions available on Bonaire are geared toward a learning (yet totally fun) experience. Two tours (one shorter than the other) are led by marine biologists who give a short classroom introduction to the marine life that is abundant in this diving paradise. After this you go snorkeling to see for yourself what you just heard about in the classroom presentation. Also educational is the 5 hour nature tour highlighting the geography of the island including incredible caves. What kid won’t love this? For those desiring a more traditional shore excursion, there are fishing charters, windsurfing, snorkeling and scuba diving tours. Curacao has one of the most unique tours in the Caribbean. It’s called the History of the Jews of Curacao tour. Highlighting the Jewish experience on this tropical island, you will visit towns, Synagogues and cemeteries. There are the usual scuba, snorkeling, windsurfing nd golfing tours, but also tours of the entire island. One tour not to miss is the Explore Curacao’s Secret Caves tour.
